The Institute of Corrosion and Protection of Metals, the Chinese Academy
of Sciences (ICPM, CAS), possessing first-class academic position as well
as advanced instruments and equipment world wide, is the only institute spe-
cialized in studying and developing science and technology on corrosion and
protection in China. Both the only State Key Laboratory of Corrosion and P-
rotection of Metals and the National Engineering Research Center for Corros-
ion Control of Metals (NCCC) attach to ICPM.
ICPM has the right to award the Doctor and Master degree on corrosion and
protection. The postdoctor station was set up in the institute. Under this con-
dition, the institute devotes itself to train the qualified personnel on corrosion
and protection. Now there is a staff of more than 400 (266 permanent staff) in
the institute, including 190 scientific researchers, 66 senior scientific research-
ers, 90 middle researchers, 1member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1
member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and 5 doctor supervisors.
The R & D fields of interest at ICPM are :
， Studying the processes of various kinds of corrosion, damage character-
istics, corrosion behaviors of various materials as well as their relations with
environmental conditions and developing fundamental theories of corrosion
science;
， Studying the electrocatalytic mechanisms of different electrolytic reactions
, corrosion and activity deterioration characteristics of electrode and develop-
ing new type electrode materials with high performance;
， Assessing and storing corrosion data of materials in natural or industrial en-
vironments, studying the characteristics and laws of material corrosion in nat-
ural environmental media and solving corrosion problems in practice;
， Developing theories and technologies of protection and searching for eco-
nomical and effective control step;
， Undertaking the corrosion control projects and the analysis of corrosion a-
ccidents as well as providing the countermeasure and consultative service.
ICPM has obtained 107 scientific achievements in a stable increasing rate in
about ten years, including 4 Awards of Scientific and Technological Advanc-
es or Natural Sciences, 27 awards issued by the Academy or Departments and
19 patents.
Journals such as "Corrosion Science and Protection Technology"are edited
and published by ICPM. ICPM has established cooperative relations or acad-
emic exchanges constantly with the famous institutes on corrosion research in
18 countries such as Germany, Japan, America, France and Italy etc. It also
undertook the projects supported by the Commission of the European Comm-
unities or the organizations of America. It presided over the international meet-
ing on high temperature corrosion and protection, the Chinese Youth Sympos-
ium on Corrosion and Protection as well as the Chinese Young Scientists Sym-
posium on Material Science (corrosion and protection of materials).
The NCCC, with the general principle of developing high technology produ-
cts and turning scientific achievements into practical technologies effectively,
has been promoting the transformation of scientific achievements to producti-
vities since it's founded. A group of projects possessing the ability of serving
state economy, demonstration, reproduction, propagation and effective circu-
lation appeared among the institute. Whizzo S & T is just one of the most dis-
